LARGE FORMAT, NO PLOTTER
How to Print a Large Poster at Home
Wide-format plotters cost thousands, and print shops charge by the square foot. With a free block poster maker and a regular desktop printer, you can produce a poster of almost any size for the price of a stack of paper.
Step 1: Plan the final size
Work backwards from your wall. Measure the space, then pick a paper size and page count that lands close to it:
| Grid (A4 portrait) | Finished size | Wall feel |
|---|---|---|
| 2 × 2 | ≈ 40 × 57 cm (15.7 × 22.4 in) | Framed-print scale |
| 3 × 3 | ≈ 60 × 86 cm (23.6 × 33.8 in) | Statement piece |
| 4 × 4 | ≈ 80 × 115 cm (31.5 × 45.3 in) | Feature wall |
| 5 × 5 | ≈ 100 × 144 cm (39.4 × 56.7 in) | Mural scale |
Sizes are approximate finished dimensions assuming 5 mm overlap tabs and trimmed sheet margins. Any rectangular layout works too — 2×3, 3×4, 5×7 — as long as it matches your image's aspect ratio, which the block poster maker preserves automatically.
Step 2: Feed it a sharp enough image
Splitting one image into many pages magnifies it, so resolution decides the result. As a rule of thumb, target 100–150 PPI at final size: a 3×3 A4 poster (≈60 × 86 cm) wants a source image of roughly 2400 × 3400 px. Phone photos from the last five years qualify; a 500 px web meme will look soft at mural scale. The built-in PPI analyzer flags the optimal viewing distance before you waste any ink.
Step 3: Print with the right settings
- Scale: Actual Size (100%) — the single most important setting.
- Paper: match the PDF (A4 vs Letter) exactly.
- Quality: "High" or "Best" for photos; "Draft" only for a test pass.
- Paper type: 120–160 gsm matte presentation paper for keeps, 80 gsm copy paper for rehearsals.
Step 4: Assemble and mount
Numbered page labels tell you the order; overlap tabs handle the alignment. Lay the bottom row first, glue each new sheet onto the tab of the one before it, then build upward row by row. For mounting, spray adhesive on foam board gives you a rigid panel, or use double-sided tape strips directly on the wall for a clean, frameless look.
